Response 2 Sovereignty Commission File # 3-14A-2-2-1-1-1 This article is from a newspaper and it describes a court case which took place in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1960. An 18-year-old African American girl who was sitting with her boyfriend in a parked car on a rural road was dragged from her car, threatened with a knife, and then raped by two white brothers, Bud (26) and Bobby (23) Alverson, of Hazel Green, AL. The brothers were convicted of the crime by a circuit court after two hours of deliberation and were sentenced to 10 years in prison. I think that the Sovereignty Commission kept this file because it is proof that people are starting to convict white people for crimes committed against African Americans. This case shows that people finally acknowledged the violence against African Americans and prosecuted the offenders for it. People’s opinions are changing and instead of a very high majority of court cases against white offenders being lost there was justice coming for African American victims. For decades African Americans were convicted and lynched for crimes against whites, mostly males for the supposed rape of white women. White people worked tirelessly to keep a poor image of African Americans now people realize that white people are capable of these acts that African Americans have been framed for. This case could have caused other victims to come forward and go to court.
